Prior to 1887, many Naval Veterans joined the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), yet many more felt that organization was too Army centric.  This resulted in the formation of a number of independent naval societies.  In January 1887, representatives of eight of those societies met in New York City where they formed the the "National Association of Naval Veterans of the United States," with Charles W. Adams, of Illinois, as first Commodore. While many Naval Veterans left the GAR to join this new society, many remained and some even opted to hold memberships in both organizations and actually served in high ranking positions within the GAR.
At the convention, a constitution, uniform, lapel button, and a national badge was adopted.  Subsequently, when the medal committee presented their findings relative to the cost of the proposed medal, it was so excessive there was a great deal of push-back. So the committee was forced to scale back the proposal to reduce the cost to an acceptable level.
    From seeing
original association medals that have come to light
(like the one illustrated in the offering)
, they vary from original drawings in that they are missing the engraved NAVY top and are devoid of any enamel decoration.
From this we concluded that the original medal envisioned was heavily enameled with NAVY embossed on the top piece.  However, both of these elements were jettisoned to reduce cost. Therefore, the medal we are offering, is a recreation of the fully enameled version we believe was originally proposed, but never manufactured.
This recreation is a must for the Civil War enthusiast, re-enactor, living historian, student of the American Civil War, and medal collectors.
Because we strive to exactly replicate the original of each item we offer, we continually research and modify our offerings as necessary.
In addition, where applicable, all are inscribed on the reverse or edge with our name and/or the mold creation date; so as not to be confused with, or presented to, some trusting individual as an authentic period piece. (rev. 4 Dec 12)
