Society of the Army of the Tennessee
In April, 1865, the Society of the Army of the Tennessee was formed at Raleigh, North Carolina, membership being restricted to officers who had served with the old Army of the Tennessee.
The object was declared to be
"to keep alive that kindly and cordial feeling which has been one of the characteristics of this army during its career in the service."
General Sherman was elected president in 1869, and continued to hold the office for many years.
When first organized in October 1862, the Union Army of the Tennessee contained but one corps, the XIII, which held 11 divisions and a cavalry command. This organization was too cumbersome, and the army was reorganized in December into four corps- the XIII, XV, XVI, and XVII- each containing two or three divisions and detachments of artillery and cavalry. The army's first commander was Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, who led it in the long campaigns to capture Vicksburg, Miss.  Subsequent commanders included Generals George H. Thomas, William T. Sherman, James B. McPherson, Oliver O. Howard, and lastly John A. Logan
The Army was victorious at the major battles of Shiloh, Corinth, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Meridian, Atlanta, the March to the Sea, and the defeat of Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia.
The major features of this medal are the “40 Rounds” cartridge box representing Major General William T. Sherman’s 15
    th
Corps, the Arrow representing Major General J. B. McPherson’s 17
    th
    Corps, the number 13 representing Major General J. A. McClernand’s 13
    th
Corps, and the cross representing Major General A. J. Smith’s 16
    th
    Corps.
Lastly, while I can find no documentation, I believe the eagle depicted on the medal is “Old Abe” aka “The War Eagle” or, as the Rebels called him, “The Yankee Buzzard”.
Old Abe, named after Lincoln, belonged to the 8
    th
Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment which served with the 1
    st
    Brigade, 1
    st
Division, Army of the Tennessee and was the Army’s unofficial mascot.
Old Abe saw action in 36 battles between 21 October 61 and 28 March 64 when he was furloughed.  It is said that Grant, Sherman and Rosecrans, out of respect, would remove their hat in the presence of Old Abe.
Old Abe attended many reunions and other events after the war including the 1876 Philadelphia Exposition and the 1880 Reunion of the Grand Army of the Republic.
Dying at the age of 21 on 28 March 81, he serves as the model of the 101
    st
Airborne Division “The Screaming Eagles.” As I said, I can’t verify that he’s represented on this medal, but “That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it!”
