Airmail Cover to London to Anglo-Saxon Petroleum (ASP) Ship
Forwarded by "ASP" Perfin to Steamship Co. in Houston Texas
1948 Airmail cover mailed from Singapore on September 15, 1948 and sent to London, then forwarded to Houston, Texas.  The cover was initially addressed to Mr. A.C. Watson, 3rd Officer, T.E.S. "Trochiscus", c/o Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Co. Ltd., St. Helens Court, Great Street Hevens, London, E.C. 3. England. After receipt in London on September 20, 1948 (see scans of back-stamp), on September 21, 1948 the cover was forwarded by Anglo-Saxon Petroleum to Messrs. Lykes Bros, Steamship Co. Inc, Houston, Texas U.S.A. The Anglo-Saxon Petroleum people applied a one shilling stamp with its perfin "ASP" (for Anglo-Saxon Petroleum) to cover the cost of forwarding. Among the scans are a scan of the actual stamp and one with the perfin hole-punching augmented.
The ship "Trochiscus" was designed to carry crude and white oil products. In 1944, it was completed at the Kaiser Shipyard, Portland, Oregon as the "
    Fort Matanzas
" for the U.S. Marine Corps.  In 1947, it was purchased by Shell Tankers U.K. (STUK, owned by Anglo-Saxon Petroleum) and renamed the "
    Trochiscus
    ."  The
    Trochiscus
served Shell Oil from 1947 to June 1959, when it was laid up in Singapore. On December 22, 1960 it arrived in Hong Kong for scrap. The ship had a tonnage of 16.478 ton, a beam of 21 meters, with an overall length of 169 meters.
Around 1898, Anglo-Saxon Petroleum became responsible for the ships of Shell Transport and Trading. In 1907 it continued to be responsible for the trade in oil by-products when the Dutch Petroleum Company was established to take over the petroleum business of the Dutch state authorities and the Shell company. The same year it was incorporated into Royal Dutch Shell. In 1908 Shell Transport and Trading placed all of its assets in Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Co and Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij which also held all of the assets of Royal Dutch Shell. During the following two decades Anglo-Saxon became the most progressive, innovative and forward-looking of all the oil carriers. In order to match transport demand, they commissioned new buildings based on their own design or, indeed, bought and re-designed existing ships with an amazing degree of innovative thinking and fantasy. Liner ships, general cargo vessels, sailing ships and even train ferries were re-built and made into oil carriers. In November 1955, The Shell Petroleum Company Ltd. took over the assets of Anglo-Saxon, which ceased to function as a separate company.
