Bryson DeChambeau’s Dallas Diary: Grapevine has become a forever home for U.S. Open champ

Two-time U.S. Open champion, former SMU star and Grapevine resident Bryson DeChambeau shares his thoughts with The Dallas Morning News about this week’s LIV Golf Team Championship at Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton.
When I was introduced during the U.S. Open in June as “Bryson DeChambeau from Grapevine, Texas,” I think it surprised some people, but I have considered the Dallas area as home — and most recently, Grapevine — ever since I was at SMU.
I grew up in California, but once I came to Dallas I was like, “This is going to be my home; I just know it.” It’s such a great place. People are fantastic. The amount of energy that’s around the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex is unlike anything I’ve been around.

I’ve been to Dubai and Australia and numerous places, but, man, it just feels different here. It’s such a comfortable place to live, even though it’s a crazy-big bustling city.
I lived over in Preston Hollow for about four or five years, and I loved it there, but I was looking for something with a little bit more acreage. I wanted something that was close to two-and-a-half acres. I was looking for about six months late in 2018 and 2019 — and in the summer of 2019 I actually found this property on Zillow.
It was in Grapevine. I went and checked it out and right when I drove up there it was my dream lot that I’d been envisioning in my sleep. I quickly jumped on it. It was a really good price. I’ve been building on it for about four years now. I’m in the house, but it’s tough to get finished.
I met Mayor William Tate over in Grapevine, and he was fantastic to me. I’ve met a lot of the city council members, and they’ve all been fantastic to me. I’m looking forward to doing a lot in the city of Grapevine and Dallas, as well, just improving and helping out where I can.
And hopefully doing something with the Grapevine municipal golf course, which I recently visited and brought the U.S. Open trophy.
I love public golf courses. I grew up on public golf courses. So in whatever way I can help the city of Grapevine and just the DFW area in regards to good public access to great golf, that’s really what I’m focused on as a part of my mission.
My mission is to entertain, educate and inspire. That encompasses being able to build out and help communities, whether that’s golf or other sports. It’s a big vision in play. I’m not going to release all the details right now, but I’ve got a foundation that I’m working through, and I’m also partnering with a couple of individuals to help get easy accessibility to the game of golf for people that are less fortunate.
It’s such a great feeling this week to be playing the LIV Team Championship in front of so many friends and fans and making the short drive from Grapevine to Carrollton.
It’s just an awesome fit for me. It really feels like home. And I personally feel like I’m going to be in Grapevine for the rest of my life, unless something crazy happens. That’s where I want to be forever.
